What are some really fun ideas for a play room?
I want to put a play room in the basement of our new home. I already know about how I want to decorate, I just don’t know what to put in it! What are your kids’ favorite things to play with? Should I have different stations (i.e.: craft corner, reading nook, etc…). This is for my own as well as nieces and nephews so its for both genders age range 4-12. Thank you!
I think stations is a GREAT idea. I would recommend maybe even using chalk-board paint in a small area, so they can write on the walls. My daughter thinks that’s the greatest thing ever. Beanbags or big pillows are great for lounging, reading, make-believe play, etc. Mine also likes her bucket of doll stuff- she can dump it on the floor and throw it all back in the bucket when she’s done. She also has a basketball net on the back of her door (with a foam basketball).
We have a few bookshelves, a dry erase board, a chalk board, some old fashioned school desks, 3 art easels (one for each boy), paint supplies, arts and crafts supplies, educational board games, and a work station for study time. The boys read novels, play games, create works of art, play school, and many, many more imaginative activities in there. My eldest is 12 and being considered for early admission to Mensa.
We have a pool/air hocky table, arts and crafts center, fooseball table, dart board, and entertainment center which includes a couple of video games and vcr/dvd player.
Well, you should put in a t-v.Since it is a play room, but in books, stuffed animals, and a music player.Since you have some older children put in a few board games, older child dvd’s and maybe some chapter books. Also,I do not know if your playroom is big enough, but one of those smalll baby sets with the slide and ladder with a walking tube. You also should make a kitchen station.HOPE THIS HELPS
I heard this idea on HGTV and thought it was fabulous. They suggested getting a small table and painting it with chalkboard paint. Kids LOVE chalk. They can draw to their hearts content and also use the table for other activities.
Fantastic idea. When I was little, my parents gave me playrooms. First, I had the "sleepout" (closed in verandah), then later I had the whole garage as they didnt’ keep their cars in there and still later, I had a garden shed. I definitely agree with having different stations – that is what I had too. Some beanbags on the floor near books and bookshelves is a fantastic idea. A craft area where the paints, paper, etc, is kept is great. Then you could also have a "house" area and maybe some board games. I wouldn’t recommend putting a computer in there though, I reckon internet use should be monitored so should be in your vision always, but maybe a TV/DVD combo would be a good idea? Would be great fun for sleepovers!
Adults, Kids love Adults not the toys but adults who want to talk and drink coffee. KIDS LOVE BEING AT YOUR FEET no matter what you do
GOOD luck with the toy room
this is from a kid. well i would put a cd player and a tv and a dvd player and a computer and a playstation, disco ball and a few animals, play cars, and a large toybox full of toys and a few kids.
Go to your local library and look up (or Google) ‘play environments for children’ in the teaching section. You’ll find tons of ideas. My idea for the moment is to make sure that one of the walls is painted half way up with blackboard paint. Blackboards are great for any age, not particularly messy, and encourage imagination & creative thinking. Good luck!
my little girl has her bean bags in one corner of her play room and a book shelf next to them. she just sits on the beanbags and reads away for ages. always a good idea in my opinion.
We have a playroom full of stuff(too much stuff). When it’s clean it is organized into sections which seems to work well for my girls. They have an area where they can leave their dollhouses set up. They have a kitchen area. They have a dressup area. If our room was bigger we would have a lot more stations, I think they are a good idea. They did that at a few of the daycares I used to work at. My girls top things they play with are dress up stuff, Kitchen stuff(kitchen, table, coffee maker, microwave, dishes, baking stuff, aprons, etc.), and dollhouse. It would be fun to have a car area with a mat that looks like a road and town for the boys. A baby care area, doll bed, high chair, changing table etc. is also a good idea. My girls love their dolls too. Have you heard of the paint that works like a chalkboard. I want to paint a section of their walls with that so they can play school. It’s cool– black paint you can write on with chalk!! Have fun with it!!
